- Nominator's rationale: The churches in question have nothing in common except that they are named after the same saint; this is textbook case of WP:SHAREDNAME. - choster (talk) 22:07, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: convert to container category, which will hold Category:Female suicide bombers and Category:People who committed sati. Remove the articles from the category. This category can be renominated for further discussion as needed. Good Ol’factory (talk) 00:07, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Non-diffusing trivial intersection that does not aid navigation. Categories are not a place for collecting statistics on comparative gender. All the suicides are already by date, so this is just a second/third/fourth tag by sex. The few relevant subcategories are already heavily cross-categorized. The others (actors, models, writers) are already up for deletion.
William Allen Simpson (talk) 15:56, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- Support in principle per nom, but add any remaining subcategories (probably only a few subcategories, most will have been deleted after earlier nominations) to Category:Suicides and Category:Death of women.
Also, is it entirely certain that all suicides in this category have already been categorized by date? If not, they should be added by date manually.Marcocapelle (talk) 17:03, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

Architecture and landmarks in Sri Lanka by district
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: Merge all Timrollpickering (talk) 23:16, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
- Propose merging:
- Category:Architecture of Ampara District to Category: Ampara District
- Category:Architecture of Anuradhapura District to Category: Anuradhapura District
- Category:Architecture of Badulla District to Category: Badulla District
- Category:Architecture of Batticaloa District to Category: Batticaloa District
- Category:Architecture of Colombo District to Category: Colombo District
- Category:Landmarks in Ampara District to Category:Ampara District
- Category:Landmarks in Anuradhapura District to Category:Anuradhapura District
- Category:Landmarks in Badulla District to Category:Badulla District
- Category:Landmarks in Batticaloa District to Category:Batticaloa District
- Category:Landmarks in Colombo District to Category:Colombo District
- Nominator's rationale: merge these are two almost empty category layers except they largely duplicate the tree of buildings and structures. Following this, I will also nominate the architecture and landmarks categories by province which suffer from the same problem as the ones by district. This is a follow-up on this earlier discussion. @William Allen Simpson and Justus Nussbaum: pinging contributors to earlier discussion. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:53, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- Support — on second thought, would prefer "Buildings and structures" be upmerged to "Architecture" instead of the other way around. But that's not what was done in the previous nomination, so we should be consistent. Some structures aren't architectural.
William Allen Simpson (talk) 11:07, 31 December 2020 (UTC) - Merge Per nom. This layer is not aiding navigation. - RevelationDirect (talk) 01:11, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: Trivial intersection. No notable WP:DEFINING link between the occupation and the manner of death. There may have been many years between the occupation and the suicide, making the link even weaker.
- Note: Sources about the death of a person will often discuss both their occupation and their cause of death. This doesn't make this intersection any more notable than a combination with other aspects often discussed in such notices, such as their number of children. See previous:
- William Allen Simpson (talk) 10:46, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- Delete per nom, except merge the male subcategories of Category:Comedians who committed suicide to Category:Male suicides because we have not discussed the suicide by gender categories yet. Marcocapelle (talk) 11:06, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

- Propose merging Category:Regents of Pandeglang to Category:Mayors and regents of places in Banten and Category:Regents of places in Indonesia
- Nominator's rationale: merge per WP:SMALLCAT, just one, two or three articles in each of these categories and they are not part of a large overall accepted sub-categorization scheme. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:24, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- Merge for Now While these places would have had more than five mayors, most are not individually notable. No objection to recreating any later if they exceed expectations and get up to 5+ articles. - RevelationDirect (talk) 12:04, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

Category:Maskilim
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: no consensus to delete. A proposal to rename as discussed by some editors could be made in a new nomination. Good Ol’factory (talk) 00:03, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: listify and delete, not a defining characteristic, the term "Maskilim" is not even mentioned in some articles. A list can better explain in text and with references why these people are considered to be Maskilim. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:22, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- Keep: Members of the movement should be categorized as such. The Haskalah is a well-defined intellectual movement, whose members' works are inextricably tied to it. Marcocapelle's concerns apply equally to, e.g., Category:People of the American Enlightenment, Category:People of the Scottish Enlightenment, or Category:People of the Modern Greek Enlightenment. Kyuko (talk) 14:27, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- Listify and delete — A well-annotated list would be better. AFAICT, the edit history shows these were previously in Category:Haskalah and recategorized by Kyuko (talk · contribs) within the past 2 weeks to Maskilim. Moses Mendelssohn, an intellectual leader, has no mention of Maskilim. Not surprising, because he was before that Haskalah era. The remaining people in Haskalah, such as Aron Freimann has no mention of either Haskalah or Maskilim, and is of the wrong era. The newspaper also doesn't even begin until years afterward. If they aren't appropriate for Haskalah, why are they appropriate for Maskilim? Lists are easier to verify.
William Allen Simpson (talk) 17:01, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- There is mention of the Haskalah in the very first sentence of the Mendelssohn article... He is literally considered "the father of the Haskalah" [1][2][3]... To clarify, "Maskil" (plural "Maskilim") is a Hebrew term used for members of the Haskalah movement. Renaming the category something along the lines of "People of the Haskalah" (like the People of the American Enlightenment, Scottish Enlightenment, and Modern Greek Enlightenment categories mentioned above, Category:Spanish Renaissance people, Category:German people of the Renaissance period, etc.) might be a solution.
If an article like Aron Freimann doesn't belong to Category:Haskalah then it shouldn't be there; that should have no bearing on whether or not this subcategory is kept. Kyuko (talk) 17:49, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- While there is a mention of Haskalah in the Mendelssohn article, he cannot possibly be Maskilim, because he died before Haskalah began. Retrospective categorization is not a good idea. Rather than adding a separate sub-category, it would probably be best to list the people. Lists are easier to verify.
William Allen Simpson (talk) 09:31, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
- The Haskalah began around the early 1770s, Mendelssohn died in 1786; there is virtually no debate among scholars whether or not he was a Maskil. Again, insofar as there are are categories for members of other Enlightenment movements, I fail to see why the Jewish Enlightenment should be treated any differently. Kyuko (talk) 14:23, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
- According to the main article: "The very name Haskalah became a standard self-appellation only in 1860". So Mendelssohn would not have referred to himself as Maskil or Maskilim and would not have referred to himself as part of Haskalah. Can readily be seen as a progenitor, but we don't categorize people retrospectively. That's yet another reason a list would be better. Also, WP:OTHERSTUFF.
William Allen Simpson (talk) 17:32, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
- The Ancient Greeks didn't call themselves 'Ancient Greeks', the word 'medieval' was coined in the 1820s ([4]), and "the term 'Enlightenment' emerged in English in the later part of the 19th century" ([5]). Yet these are the modern terms used—yes, retrospectively—to refer to specific historical periods or movements, and the people associated to them. There is precedent. Also, WP:OTHERCATSEXIST. Kyuko (talk) 18:49, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

- Keep or rename to Category:People of the Haskalah movement or such like. The question of which people should be included is not one for CfD. Peterkingiron (talk) 19:38, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
- Lean Toward Delete/Rename if Kept I clicked through quite a few of these articles and this category usually seemed subjective and not spelled out in most articles. Usually that's just a matter for some cleanup but it raises the question of whether we can objectively categorize most people by this movement at all. If kept, rename to Category:People of the Haskalah movement along the lines of PKI's suggestion. - RevelationDirect (talk) 19:00, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: Violates WP:SHAREDNAME. Avitus by itself was not a specific family name in ancient Rome. See here a closed and successful request to rename another category using more or less the same rationale. Avilich (talk) 02:58, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: rename, or at least merge confirmed. A fresh nomination to focus solely on whether or not to keep Category:Best Science Fiction Film Saturn Award winners could be held, as not all participants gave views on that. Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:55, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Standardization per Category:Best Picture Academy Award winners and Category:Best Film BAFTA Award winners. Films are not alive so "who" is not an appropriate way to reference them. – Muboshgu (talk) 02:01, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- I agree to the renaming. Lieutenant commander Spock (talk) 5:19, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- A logical proposal. —ATS (talk) 02:31, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- Delete both per WP:OCAWARD (WP:NONDEF), in the articles the award is merely mentioned in passing. Marcocapelle (talk) 03:06, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- Tagged Target/Nom Background It looks like the
nominatorLCS created the Category:Films who won Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film and then, quickly realized they meant to create Category:Best Science Fiction Film Saturn Award winners but never populated the original category. I just tagged the target category to give flexibility in this CFD outcome. Regardless, the !votes will be a little stilted because this isn't really a proposed rename or but a delete of the original (empty) category.- RevelationDirect (talk)
- The nominator (Muboshgu) was not the creator (Lieutenant commander Spock), who has agreed to the renaming above.
William Allen Simpson (talk) 12:36, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

- The nominator (Muboshgu) was not the creator (Lieutenant commander Spock), who has agreed to the renaming above.
- Delete Both/Speedy Delete if Target Kept The award does not seem defining under WP:OCAWARD and is already listified. If the target category is kept (see background above) then speedy delete Category:Films who won Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film per WP:C2E, author request. - RevelationDirect (talk) 12:21, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- Speedy rename — Prefer to follow the BAFTA et alia structure. Although smaller than MTV, has a larger constituency than BAFTA, so not WP:OCAWARD.
William Allen Simpson (talk) 12:36, 31 December 2020 (UTC) - Rename per nom The Saturn Awards are significant for genre films. Dimadick (talk) 02:01, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
- Delete per WP:OCAWARD; these aren't the kind of award that is even noted in most of the winners' biographies. The ceremony has only been aired once since the 1970's and seems much more an 'in' award than one of the big ones. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 22:59, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

Category should be moved to Category:CD Paracuellos Antamira players, after the club's change of name. MYS77 ✉ 00:40, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: delete, merging content to Category:Gliese and GJ objects. Good Ol’factory (talk) 00:23, 9 January 2021 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: The system isn't particularly notable, and the article for Gliese 682 b is just a redirect, not a real article. Kepler-1229b talk
- Merge to Category:Gliese and GJ objects per WP:SMALLCAT. Marcocapelle (talk) 03:11, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

This city does not exist; seemingly created in error (perhaps mistaken for Category:Katagami, Akita, as also suggested by the categorization of Category:Katagami, Aichi within Category:Cities in Akita Prefecture), Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 00:16, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- Speedy Delete Since the only thing in here is Kenichi Kaga and he is from Category:Katagami, Akita. I think this falls under WP:C2A, typographic and spelling fixes. RevelationDirect (talk) 00:44, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: merge. Good Ol’factory (talk) 00:22, 9 January 2021 (UTC)
- Propose Dual Upmerging Category:Books about the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging to Category:Books about apartheid and Category:Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging
- Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NARROWCAT and likely WP:SMALLCAT
- This category groups 2 articles about books about the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging. Neither of the target categories for upmerge are very large and this category doesn't have much room for growth, at least with English language publications, and it's has been around since 2014. No objection to recreating later if I'm wrong and it ever gets up to 5+ articles. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:11, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

Category:Christmas Island support structures

- The result of the discussion was: merge. Good Ol’factory (talk) 00:20, 9 January 2021 (UTC)
- Propose Upmerging Category:Christmas Island support structures to Category:Christmas Island
- Nominator's rationale: Per WP:OC generally
- I assumed this was a Buildings & Structures category but the only thing in it is Category:Courts of Christmas Island which is already well categorized. I didn't see any equivalent categories under Category:States and territories of Australia so, whatever the intent here, it's not currently aiding navigation. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:11, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- Merge, redundant and obscure category layer. Marcocapelle (talk) 03:19, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- Merge -- unnecessary category layer. I do not think the island is that big; is it? Peterkingiron (talk) 19:41, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
- 135 km2 (52 sq mi), less than 2000 people. The whole tree of Category:Christmas Island may be simplified enormously. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:17, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
- Related Nomination A broader nomination about Christmas Island was opened by another editor right here. Your input (pro/con/other) is also welcome there. - RevelationDirect (talk) 14:03, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
